Introduction
Hogwarts Legacy, released in 2023, is the first major continuation in the Harry Potter universe in a decade. It is a role-playing game in which you explore the worlds of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. Your playable character enters Hogwarts as a fifth-year year facing the dangers of a goblin rebellion. By teaming up with your Professor and friends, you venture on an adventure to save Hogwarts. So, let’s explore Hogwarts Legacy and what makes it a great game!
An Open World Exploration
Hogwarts Legacy offers open-world gameplay. The map is average in size; however, you can explore different areas with unique features. The two major areas in the game are Hogwarts and Hogsmeade—you’ll usually find most of the quests in these areas.
As the story progresses, you travel to new areas on the map. Here you can find new side quests that enhance open-world exploration. At the same time, you can continue the story by completing the trials and quests you find at Hogwarts.
The Perks of Open World
In the Harry Potter movies and shows, you can’t really imagine the surroundings thoroughly. However, in the game, you get a whole idea about the terrain and places in the Harry Potter universe. You can literally explore any place or location that you desire.
First of all, the Hogwarts design is immaculate, as you can explore it from both the inside and the outside. It also has places like the Forbidden Forest and some old ruins mentioned in the books. Thus, you’re in for a great time if you know the related terminologies.
Interesting Story Mode
The most important aspect of an RPG title is the story. Yes, Hogwarts Legacy is not related to Harry Potter books or movies. However, it does not need those stories. It is a standalone game with a good and solid plot that does not rely on the past.
Even someone who has not read or watched Harry Potter can enjoy the game on their own. Furthermore, the game helps you understand the entire world. Therefore, within a few hours, you get familiar with both the story and gameplay.
The main quests come along with side quests, which help you level up and complete the game. Both are complementary to one another. Apart from the main story, which is very good, you also end up with different side quests or storylines.
Mysterious and Engaging Side Quests
Additional storylines in the form of side quests are necessary for open-world titles. This way, you’re not just working towards finishing the game but also completing the meaningful storylines. In the Hogwarts game, there are plenty of stories which you can explore.
You can find side quests in both the Hogwarts and the open areas on the map. You just have to explore your surroundings to find the different quests. Again, these quests can be doable in a single playthrough or used to build more story on top of them.
Lively Combat Mechanics and More
Combat is an important facet for single-player games. You can’t expect a game to do better without proper combat. For Harry Potter fans, the most important combat parameter is the spells, and this game has it all.
You can defeat different types of enemies using spells and potions during combat. All are very engaging, and even though sometimes it becomes repetitive, there are new spells that you can integrate into the fights. But for that, you have to complete side quests and missions.
What Could’ve Been Better in Hogwarts Legacy
The only significant problem in the game is combat-related. After some time, the fights become repetitive. Also, the main quests or trials are not much different for a substantial portion of the game. You’re facing similar enemies on your main quest with similar puzzles and mechanics.
Apart from the few repetitive gameplay highlights, Hogwarts is a solid game. It has everything a Potterhead needs for quality time on their gaming devices. Lastly, the game performs best on new console generations or high-end PCs.
Note: You should not play this game on an old generation of consoles, as 30 fps will not do justice to this game. Also, you will experience game lag on less-optimized or less-powerful systems.
Final Thoughts on Hogwarts Legacy
Hogwarts Legacy is a treat for Potterheads. It covers most aspects of the Harry Potter universe. This way you’re always admiring the art and creative vision of the developers. You might not like some aspects of the story or the game’s repetitive nature.
But after some time, you become really invested in the game, in its quality and slow storytelling. The reason for this is that not all players know about the franchise. So, it tries to cater to absolute beginners of this magical universe.
