Reading Self Help Books Doesn’t Guarantee Personal Growth

Introduction

Self-help books are some of the best-selling titles in modern times. The allure of this genre is giving hope, motivation and knowledge to the reader. It is a good way to get us started with reading. However, reading the self-help genre doesn’t change anything.

I have read titles in a similar genre, and only after a few years did I realise that real growth is putting effort into things. That’s how you get started and get things done. Ultimately, you build routines that you learn from books and map them out to become better.

Self-Help Books Genre

Many new readers search for or buy books online. They want to build a habit of reading, so they get the search results. Most of the time, they are referred to self-help titles. Now, reading books in any genre is a personal decision and choice. You should read what makes you comfortable.

However, people pick up self-help books and expect change in their lives. In reality, change is a product of action. By merely reading, you’re only doing half the work. Effort is important and necessary to put the knowledge from self-help titles into practice. This way, you can achieve great things and become a better person.

Making the Most of Self-Help Titles

If you’re reading a self-help book, you should always take notes. After taking notes, you have to put them into practice. This way, you can comprehend whether they work or not. Moreover, you can take advice from other readers as well. This will save your time and effort. Not every book deserves your attention and completion.

By putting knowledge into practice, you can experience real self-help. Otherwise, it’s positive talking and occasional motivation. Effort stays with you forever, but trying to change life by merely reading is not enough. Reading is a good habit and a foundation for a meaningful life, but it will not fight the innate battles for you! It is a tool and should be paired with individual efforts for better results.

The Best Reading Genre for Everyone

The best books are different for everyone. The book that changed my life should not be similar to the next person’s. However, after reading different genres, I can say one thing. The books and literary masterpieces that moved me the most had philosophical themes and narratives. They were books of Russian, Western, and Eastern literature.

However, the underlying themes and exploration of philosophical ideas made them different. In a way, you gain access to some of the most interesting ideas that come to mind. Some titles worth mentioning are The Brothers Karamazov and Shakespeare.

Conclusion

Self-help books are popular for their motivational content, but real growth requires action rather than mere reading. While they can spark interest in reading, change comes from applying the knowledge gained through practice.

The best books vary from person to person, but philosophical works often provide profound insights. Ultimately, reading is a foundational habit, and individual efforts are necessary for meaningful change.
